Wembley Ave. Kitchen Addition

Ottawa, ON

A modest addition allowed the owners to relocate the dining room to the rear of the existing kitchen and thus lead onto the garden. After gutting it and opening it up to the new dining room, we created a surprisingly bright and cheerful space. A floor level change of two steps down to the dining room strongly defines the change from one zone to the other. A material change from maple to white porcelain tile also clearly defines the two different rooms.

Clean contemporary lines are high lighted with maple shaker cabinets, stainless steel appliances, hood and backsplash. The island has a floating L -shaped glass eating-bar counter. The floating theme is repeated with a wall of floating base cabinets and a floating wall of horizontal glass-faced uppers. A floating pantry wall elegantly opposes the L shaped base cabinets. The floating qualities of the base cabinets are firmly anchored by appliances at each end, built-in wall ovens on one side and a double door fridge on the other. Three crisp white hanging lights draw the eye to the island and beyond into the views of the garden over the dining room. The black granite countertops cap the cabinet bases and complete the theme of floating. Two and one half inch deep granite tops the island and three quarter inch deep granite tops the base cabinets along the walls.
